Being in the present moment is an all important concept to grasp for an effective meditative absorption and to end suffering of the mind. All the action of life happens in the present moment. It is the only reality. Most often, mind wanders to the past or future, denying us the joy of present moment. Mind gets caught up in its own mindless chatter which only results in more agony.
One may use breath as an anchor to the present moment. In fact, breath is the most fundamental bodily process that keeps us alive and is an incredible element to grasp the reality of present moment. Feel the air going through the nostrils, expanding and contracting movements of the diaphragm. Become an observer of the mind processes that may take you away from being in the present moment. Label those processes and throw them away and come back to the observance of the breathing process.
