In this section, a series of posts will be made trying to grasp, approach, understand and dispel Cancer.

In simple layman’s terms, cancer is an uncontrolled cell behavior. As we all know a cell is the most fundamental building block of us. A cell in turn has several fine structures and is akin to a city if we dare to compare so. Like a city’s functioning requires various supply chain, energy production, consumption and waste disposal systems, so does a cell.

Cell Organelles and their City Analogies

  • Cell Membrane => City border
  • Chloroplasts => Solar Energy Plants
  • Chromosomes => Rolled up Blueprints
  • Cytoplasm => Lawns
  • DNA => Original Blueprints
  • RNA => Copies of Blueprints
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum => Highway or road system
  • Golgi Bodies => Post Office
  • Lysosomes => Waste Disposal
  • Mitochondria => Energy Plants
  • Nuclear Membrane => City Hall Fence
  • Nucleolus => Copy Machine
  • Nucleus => City Hall
  • Protoplasm => Atmosphere
  • Proteins => Bricks or lumber
  • Ribosomes => Brick yard
  • Vacuole => Warehouses

It may be difficult to grasp all the terminology, but this analogy to real life macro model has been presented to facilitate simplification of complexity of cell structure and functioning. As one can see a cell has several fine tuned components performing various precise operations. Just like our real life macro model of a city, several things can go wrong with the cell. A cell is in fact a much more efficient unit when compared to a city, otherwise all of us cannot be healthy most of the time. In subsequent sections, we shall examine what can go wrong with our cells and what we can do about it. Though these concepts are useful in the context of Cancer, these are applicable to overall health and well being in general, as our health is the aggregation of cellular health.
