Most often, we either want things that we don’t have, or we don’t want things we already have longing for better things. The pursuit of wanting more has no limits. The moment we acquire the desired thing, our tendency most often is to have some other more desirable things. Key to true happiness is to be content with what we have as once we fall into the endless pursuit of wanting more all the time, we fail to even enjoy what we have.
Why not appreciate the things we already have and be content and find happiness in that process?
The following four pairs happen in life no matter how careful one can be. It is futile to expect only one out of each pair and try to avoid the other. Our tendency is always long for the favorable aspects and be averse to the unfavorable. But, in reality if we accept both aspects just as simply, most of the suffering will cease. Understanding this puts things in proper perspective.
1. Pleasant and Unpleasant (Pleasure and Pain)
2. Gain and Loss
3. Praise and Blame
4. Fame and Disrepute
Simply put Enlightenment is a state of wakefulness and a choiceless awareness of being alive. It is a state where true nature of the Universe is understood and a state of balance is achieved.
To start with, understanding the following concepts will lead one in the path to enlightenment.
1. Impermanence
All things in the Universe are impermanent. There are no exceptions. Human predicament is that we want permanence of all things which is contradictory to the very nature of the Universe. When we let go of this urge to permanence and accept the universality of the impermanence, the struggle against the tide wanes and we flow with ease in the eternity of the Universe.
2. Suffering
Suffering is an inevitable part of life. One cannot have happiness alone and no suffering in life. Expecting lasting happiness will only result in unsatisfactoriness as it is simply impossible. Both suffering and happiness are impermanent and should be viewed as such.
3. Not self / Non self
The concept of self is an illusory one when we examine the true constitution of our bodies and minds at a micro level. When we break down our bodies into tiny particles that they are made up of, they are all same molecules, atoms, electrons, protons and neutrons. So, the fundamental building blocks we are made up of are one at the same. We get caught up in the delusion of a separated self due to grasping onto the notion of a separate entity that appears to last, which we all know for sure is not the actual reality.
