Meditation is a branch of knowledge that deals with calming the mind. In a given day one can get agitated for any number of reasons.

Here are few simple steps you can take to calm the mind at any given moment:

1. Deep Breathing

Deep breathing is an anti-dote to fight or flight stress response our bodies are often caught up in due to our evolutionary conditioning. Count mentally 1, 2, 3 when you inhale and count down 3, 2, 1 when you exhale. Or say a word that you like such as Om which has some healing sound quality.

2. Mindfulness

Most of the time our mind wanders in the past or future completely ignoring what is happening in the moment. This mind chatter causes most of the suffering. If you devote your complete attention to the details of the activities that you are currently performing, it is called mindfulness practice and it relieves us from the worries of the past or future. Take for example the act of driving. Be mindful of all the incredible coordination that goes into performing such an activity.

3. Positive Imagery

Imagine something positively exhilarating nature image such as a beautiful mountain or valley. As mind substitutes this natural landscape replacing scenery of negative chatter, it calms down as the focus has been shifted to positivity.
