Suffering is a universal characteristic of life and is applicable to all species. Root cause of suffering is craving. Craving can be desire for continuation of possession or acquisition of pleasant objects or feelings and aversion to unpleasant objects or feelings. As long as craving is not abandoned, suffering cannot be eliminated. Unpleasantness is bound to happen in life no matter how careful one can be. Realization of the fact that both pleasant and unpleasant events are transitory in nature should put suffering in proper perspective. Happiness is not permanent and so is suffering. Without understanding the full nature of suffering one cannot fully appreciate the happiness in life.
